My name is Dave Moore (at center with the skinny legs). I’m a public-school kid, born in Toledo, Ohio, raised on the belief that if the good guys didn’t win, they should have. My earliest memories were of reenacting Captain Kirk-style fights while balanced precariously over a moat of shag-carpet lava. Since then, the fights have shifted toward preserving the Earth, democracy and the scientific process. Truthful content creation and communications can transform your organization or cause. My data storytelling adds facts that can change entire narratives.
My Story
At a networking event in the fall of 2024, I realized that when I told people what I was doing, they pretty much said the same thing. Communications. Editing. Writing. Storytelling. The question became obvious: Who needs another Generic Content Person? Especially with artificial intelligence creeping up behind us? Truth is, I’ve been working as a data storyteller since the mid 1990s, when I was working as a reporter in the Midwest. That’s when I became a member of the National Institute for Computer Assisted Reporting. Yet I didn’t feel good about promoting my data work, because I hadn’t worked on projects exceeding 1 million records. In April 2025, with the help of artificial intelligence and RStudio, I started using the R programming language, which can (theoretically) handle files that contain more than 2 billion records (for reference, we're more than 2 billion miles from the planet Neptune). Now that the 1-million-record shackles have been removed, I’m ready to tell bigger stories, using Big Data. Learn more about my data storytelling projects here.
